In this, the season of impending resolutions, I hope to remind us all about just how capable of change we are.
New Years resolutions get a bad rep. Why? Because they’re so often abandoned. Our media has grown jaded about them, and plenty of messaging bombards us this time of year practically condemning them, depicting them as childish, fanciful and doomed from the very beginning.
While it’s true that no one time of year is better for everyone when it comes to working on the self, we shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that New Years resolutions (or resolutions made at any time of the year) cannot be successful.
When we become committed to self-improvement, we engage in practices like meditation. When we honor that practice, we become truly self-aware and connected with the source of our consciousness. Once we’ve established this awareness and connection, we become capable of working toward the perfection of our own character, and this fosters in us an unprecedented ability to change the lives of ourselves and our fellow souls on this Earth.
It’s not just New Years resolutions. The lies breathed by a society largely asleep to their true selves include statements such as, “If you haven’t done it yet, you never will,” “If you were going to ______________, you’d have done it already,” and “You’ve said that a million times, but you’ll never actually change.” It’s even more heartbreaking when these become the words of the voices inside our heads, and we are essentially lying to ourselves for reasons no sleeping soul can understand.
Once we’ve glimpsed the scope of our existence, we can recognize such statements for exactly what they are, expressions of the speakers’ confusion and disappointment born of a lack of understanding of their soul’s potential. Don’t miss the most important part of that statement. Comments such as this ALWAYS reflect on the speaker’s view of him or herself, even when he or she presumes to be directing them at someone else. For one thing, there is no “other,” and more pertinent to this conversation, once we’ve realized the unlimited potential of our souls, we’d never make such foolish statements about any of them.
The time of New Years can be useful for planning changes, because once we’re tuned into collective consciousness, we can even more successfully tap into the strength that comes from knowing that many of our fellow souls are making difficult changes as well. Our souls don’t struggle with these changes, but our flesh does, and in our continual striving to live more as a soul than a body, that awareness can bring us much needed encouragement.
So go ahead and make some New Years resolutions if you find strength in this time of year. Remember there is no failure as long as you’re striving and “doing to be.”
And I hope everyone is finding merriment in this season when so many hearts are raised in celebration.
Happy Holidays with LOVE!
